Destination Haiti: I Need Your Support

UPDATE [11/18/2011]:  Well folks, look like I won't be making this trip.  I was unable to come up with the funds required.  Thanks, again, for all of your support and prayers.  For now, I'm still reaching out to make an impact in mission field here in Houston, TX.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As you may be aware, the nation of Haiti is still struggling to recover from the massive earthquake that took the lives of over 220,000 of its residents in January of 2010.  Many were left homeless and countless children were orphaned, as their parents perished in the devastation.  Then there are those who have struggled to survive, amidst the cholera outbreak, due to the lack of clean water, a quality sanitation system and the lack of proper medical treatment.
These are just some of the conditions that the general population face on a day-to-day basis.  Not to mention, the deplorable and inhumane conditions of many of the prisons.  Imagine a cell filled with 80 prisoners, that was originally designed to hold only 12.  Many of these prisoners are detained for months or even years before even going to trial or being charged with a crime.
Here is a quote from a recent article posted by Pastor Mike Ward, who has visited Haiti on several mission trips already:
"In a land where misery is common, Haiti's jails are uncommonly harsh, hidden corners of darkness rarely seen by outsiders. In one month several years ago, 11 inmates died in the Penitentier National, the nation's largest prison. Some died from malnutrition and lack of sunlight, the rest from tuberculosis and AIDS.
There is no medication at the prison clinic, and little medical care. Beds are in short supply, and only the inmates with influence get assigned one. Other patients crawl onto any available space, and that often means a cold cement floor. The men who become too sick to treat are put out in the courtyard, where they die, often alone."
Please refer to this Fox News story to see further information about some of the prison conditions and some of the current efforts to bring change.
I will be traveling to Haiti with a mission team from our church, Grace Church of Humble, December 7 - 11, 2011.  We will be partnering with a local ministry to meet various needs and share the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Our goal is to help meet some of the immediate needs of those that we can assist and give them hope and let them know that they have not been forgotten.  Our current schedule includes a visit to a local school and to one of the local prisons, among other places.
The cost of my trip is $1,500, which will cover travel, accommodations, transportation and all meals while in Haiti.  The philosophy of our ImagineNations campaign is all can PRAY, many can GIVE and some can GO.  Therefore, I solicit your prayers, first and foremost, as we prepare for this journey.  Secondly, I ask for your financial support.  No amount is too small!  Even a gift of $5 can make a tremendous difference.
I will definitely be contributing some of my personal finances towards this effort, but I cannot do it alone.  Besides, I know that you too will be blessed, as I return and share the wonderful testimonies of God's goodness and miracle working power in the lives of those that will be touched through your generosity.  Not only this, but there will be stories yet untold, revealed only in heaven, of the profound effects that your outpouring of love and compassion will have had on the eternal destinies of those who will answer the call to salvation.
All donations are tax-deductible and, for your convenience, can be made online through the secure website for Grace Church.  If possible, please make donations by November 15, 2011.  Please follow the instructions below:
Flash Mob Notice...Are You Prepared?
 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
 12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.
 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
1 Corinthians 12:4-6, 12, 27 (NIV)
Ok, so you're probably familiar with the whole "flash mob" scene.  A group of random individuals get notice of a certain time and location where they will all meet up and perform some dance routine.  These individuals are given specific instructions for the dance that is going to be performed and must rehearse in order to be properly prepared to be in sync with everyone else that will be dancing.  They must also be at the right place, at the right time.
I think of this in comparison to our daily lives and the way God orchestrates and directs us.  I believe there are divine connections that He ordains for our lives.  There are doors that He has prepared for us to walk through, windows of opportunity that He provides us.  Yet, we have a part to play.
How often have you felt the gentle leading of the Holy Spirit to call someone?  To take a trip to a certain location?  To practice doing something you've always dreamed of doing?
I think of a commercial I recently heard, by recording artist, Toni Braxton, speaking about Autism.  She mentions in this commercial about the odds of her being discovered by a music industry insider, while pumping gas at a service station.  What if she had never opened her mouth to sing what was in her heart that day?  What if she was too embarrassed about what others may think?
Pastor Joel Osteen often says, "It only takes one touch of God's favor to change your entire life!"  How true that is.  But, I believe this starts with us following the leading and guiding of the Holy Spirit, as He guides us on the journey of preparation for what God has in store for us.
I would like to challange you today, to take the time to do the things God is leading you to do.  You have one small piece to a larger puzzle.  There are others also in preparation for an appointed time and place, where God will bring it all together.  Though, individually, what you have to offer may seem small, in the grand scheme of things.  But, know this...you too, play a major role.
Don't be left standing in the crowd as a spectator when the music starts.  Be a part of the action.  Be a part of what God wants to do, in and through your life.
Overcoming Condemnation & Receiving God's Forgiveness
“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”  Luke 22:31-32 (NIV)
You might consider Peter to have been one Jesus' right hand men.  He was there at His side throughout the majority of His earthly ministry.  He walked, talked and ate with Him on a daily basis.  He witnessed signs, wonders and miracles at Jesus' hands or, often, command.  I mean, something you and I could only dream of being able to do.  Can you imagine, to have been present during His earthly ministry?
Yet, even after all this, we read, in at least three accounts of the Gospels, of Peter's denial of Jesus.  Hand picked by Jesus, involved in full time ministry, trained by the Master Himself.  It doesn't get much better than that.  No denying his calling, no question about the competency of his teacher.  Yet, even Peter is not immune to falling at this point.
There is nothing that we can do that takes God by surprise.  He knows us better than we know ourselves.  This is one reason it is so critical that we spend time in His presence and learn to hear His voice.  I believe this is what made the difference between Peter receiving God's forgiveness and restoration and Judas hanging himself, after being overcome with condemnation.
Luke 22:62 goes on to tell us that when Peter recalled the words of Christ, he began to weep bitterly.  I have to believe, at some point, Peter also recalled Jesus' words, as mentioned in verses 31 and 32.  I believe, remembering these words, inspired Peter's faith to believe that he could be forgiven, restored and used by God.
May God grant us hearts sensitive enough to be moved to repentance by the conviction of the Holy Spirit.  Scripture goes on to tell us in 1 John 1:9 that, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
None of us is beyond falling into sin.  We all miss God, in some way, whether in word, thought or deed.  But, I believe it is through an intimate relationship with the Lord that we begin to live a life of obedience and sensitivity to the leading and guidance of the Holy Spirit.  This is what causes a spiritual maturity that limits the frequency and degree to which we find ourselves entangled in the snares of the enemy of our souls, fulfilling the lusts of our flesh and overcome by the cares of this life.
God loves you more than you can ever imagine and has good plans for your life, as He mentions in Jeremiah 29:11.  Receive His love, mercy, grace and forgiveness today.  Once you have received that forgiveness, freely share that forgiveness with those around you.
Prejudged Blessing
If you judge me
Based on the color of my skin
Where I was born
Or the town I live in
If you refuse to hear me
Because I happen to stutter
Or I don't happen to enunciate
Every syllable I utter
If you're blind to the vision
I endeavor to share
Because you can't stand
The style of clothes that I wear
If you're afraid to be seen with me
Out of embarrassment and shame
Fearing the thought of being associated
When someone calls my name
You cut off a blessing
You might otherwise receive
Because it didn't come
As you thought or perceived
Offended by the vessel
God chose to use
You, out of prejudice
Have blindly refused
But there are those who've rejected
One much greater than I
Whose envy, rage and hatred
Hung Him on a cross to die
Sleeping With The Enemy by Herbert Poole
I've played the whore
I've opened the door
Allowed sin
To come in
Mingle and be my friend
Tasted of her goods
Drank her wine
Oblivious to the fact
She was stealin' my time
Taking life
As I freely gave it
While all the while
You were tryin' to save it
I welcomed the thief in
To kill, steal and destroy
To have his way
With my wife, little girls and boy
Cause I was high on sin
Drowing in lust
It didn't matter the price
It was gratification or bust
I thought I had a hold
Thought I had control
But, all the while
I was losin' my soul
Though the grass looked greener
On the other side
I was blind to the fact
Lust is never satisfied
Oh, the temporary satisfaction
Is only a distraction
While the hunger
Grows stronger
That leads to my destruction
But you broke the chains
That bound me
Send love, mercy and grace
To surround me
When death would have dealt
It's crushing blow
You stepped in
And said, "No!"
Called me out of a tomb
Of sin and death
Spoke over me, life
And breathed new breath
Gave me a chance
For a brand new start
Restored my soul
Gave me a clean heart
Now I seek only
To do Your will
Take back what I allowed
The enemy to steal
And, so I sleep, no longer
With the enemy of my soul
And die daily
That, You, my Lord and Redeemer,
Might have full control
Is Your Gift or Anointing for Sale?
God has gifted and anointed us for His purposes and plans.  Yet, how many of us have been found prostituting these gifts, talents and anointings for our personal gain and glory?  Please, don't get me wrong.  I do believe that God will often allow us to prosper be blessed, as we walk in obedience to His leading and guidance, offering our gifts, talents and anointings for His glory and the building of His kingdom.
There is a story in 2 Kings 5, that tells of a high ranking official, a valiant soldier, who had leprosy.  This man was Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram.  He learns of the prophet, Elisha, through a young servant girl from Israel.  She sends word that the prophet can heal him.
Naaman secures the approval of the King and gathers an impressive assortment of money and gifts to give the prophet in exchange for his healing.  As he arrives, Elisha doesn't even come out to greet him, but rather, sends a messenger with instructions for Naaman to follow in order to receive his healing.
After reluctantly following the prophet's instructions, Naaman is indeed healed, as Elisha had spoken.  It is then that Naaman believes in the God whom Elisha serves.  As a matter of fact, he declares, "Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel.  So please accept a gift from your servant."
Elisha refuses the gifts and money that Naaman offers.  Even though Naaman tries to insist, the prophet still refuses.  He declares, "As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing."  It is then that Naaman goes on to declare that he will not make any more burnt offerings or sacrifices to any other gods, except the Lord.
I believe, had Naaman not saw Elisha's humility, conviction and dedication to God manifested in such a powerful way, he probably wouldn't have been moved to make the proclamation that he did.  Naaman needed to know that his trust needed to be in God, not his wealth or position.  He needed to know that God wanted his heart and his worship, not his money.
However, Elisha's servant, Gehazi, allowed greed and deceit to fill his heart.  He sees an opportunity for personal gain, regardless of the fact that the prophet has declined the gifts and money.  In the end, Gehazi is struck with Naaman's leprosy.  Not only is he affected by this, but Elisha declares that his descendents will also suffer the curse brought through his disobedience and greed.
I am often mindful of the things that God has entrusted to me.  Am I using them for God's glory or my own?  Am I building my kingdom or His?  Am I more concerned about earthly possessions than I am the value of one lost soul?
The Lord exhorts us to do for those who are not able to do for us in return.  Jesus goes on to say, in Luke 16:11, "So if you have not be trustworth in handling worldy wealth, who will trust you with true riches?"
Abundant Life or Vicarious Life?
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
John 10:10 (NIV)
Jesus came to give us life, abundant life.  Life, that is, as God intended for us.  Yet, sadly, many of us have settled for a cheap imitation.
I recall, while going through some counseling at one point, the counselor asking a series of questions.  As I began to respond, he would follow up with an interesting question.  "So, what does that look like?"  This kind of caught me off guard.  It made me stop and think for a few minutes.
Often we read passages of Scripture, without ever really stopping to think, "what does that look like in my life?"  When Jesus says that He's come to give you "abundant life" or "life to the full" what does that mean to you?  Have you really stopped to think about it?  Or, perhaps, you may ask, "what is it supposed to look like to me?"
I've been meditating on this one for a while.  But, of course, God deals with each of us individually.  I may read a passage of Scripture and receive certain insight, revelation or understanding, whereas God may show you something totally different.  At any rate, I'd like to take a few minutes and share something the Lord put in my spirit regarding this passage of Scripture recently.
One of our senior pastors recently made a statement that cut me, and cut me deep.  He asked a question, basically to the effect, "why do so many of us have Blockbuster cards, but not a library card?"  We have chosen entertainment over education.  I was greatly convicted by this.
But, to take this a step further, how many of us have chosen entertainment over experience?  We sit for hours watching television and movies, playing video games or surfing the internet.  What happened to us getting out and living life?  Many us opt to travel to distant lands, far away galaxies; get transported to the future or taken back to pre-historic times; explore mysteries and solve crimes, all while never leaving the comforts of our home.  We have traded personal interaction for a digital world.
I think of movies like Surrogates and Inception along with many of the fantasy video games now available.  One my children love is SIMS.  Then, of course, there are the countless online fantasy worlds.  Just create an avatar and become anyone you can imagine.
There have been times when I've spent practically the whole day just watching movies.  And as the movie credits begin to scroll across the screen, I am quickly sobered to the reality of the mundane life I briefly sought to escape.  The adventure is over, at least until the next showing.
But, is this really the life Jesus came that we might have?  I venture to say no!  God is a god of relationship, first and foremost.  Secondly, as a part of the great commission, Jesus told us to go into all the world.  He desires us to experience His life flowing through us, as we step out to reach a lost and dying world that needs to know Him.
I am greatly inspired as I read so many of the stories of the Bible.  Perhaps "accounts" is a better word to use,  because I believe they are more than just stories.  I believe they are actual accounts of encounters that various individuals had with God, as He revealed Himself, in and through their lives.  I believe He also wants to do the same thing in your life and mine.
As Moses and the children of Israel saw God part the Red Sea; as God gave David victory over a giant named Goliath; as Peter stepped out of a boat and walked on water with Jesus, so I believe God has great things that He wants to do in and through our lives.  But the question remains, will we choose abundant life or continue to settle for living life vicariously?
For His Glory!!!
As I was listening to a message this morning, I was, again, reminded of something I had shared quite some time ago.  I wasn't sure that I still had this, but the Lord brought to my rememberance that I probably still had this in my email archives.  After a quick search, voila...there it was.  I pray that you'll be blessed by this.
There is much we can learn from the life of John the Baptist.  A man anointed and filled with the Spirit from the womb.  There was no doubt he was called, anointed, appointed and chosen by God.
John was someone we'd consider radical.  A man preaching in the desert, eating locust and wild honey, clothed in camel hair.  A man that was not afraid to tell it like it was...even to those in positions of authority and government.  Here was a man that did not seek the praise or approval of man.  A man that was not swayed by popular opinion.
John preached repentance and was sent to prepare the people for the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.  Even as Jesus came to be baptised by John, that the scriptures might be fulfilled, John exhibited such humility.  John declared that he was not worthy to even carry Jesus' sandals.  He said that he was the one that needed to be baptised by Jesus, when Jesus came to be baptised by him.
As things progress we come to find John imprisoned for speaking out against the leaders of his day.  Not for anything wrong, but for righteousness sake.  At the same time Jesus' ministry is going forth with mighty miracles, sign and wonders.  Yet, during this time John's faith begins to waver.
John sends his disciples to ask Jesus if He is indeed the Christ.  After all that John has done in the name of the Lord, and even more, he is the cousin of Jesus, yet Jesus does nothing to set him free, to remove him from the peril that lies before him.  When John's disciples come to Jesus, He allows them to witness the works of God being manifested and then gives them a response to deliver to John.  "Go back and report to John what you hear and see:  The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.  Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me."
Jesus goes on to say great things about John the Baptist.  He declares that John is "more than a prophet."  He even goes so far as to say, "Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist."
The same God that delivered Daniel from the lion's den, the three Hebrew boys from the fiery furnace, the children of Israel from the hand of Pharaoh, allows John to be beheaded.  Somewhere along the way John has forgotten that it's not about him, but about the glory of God being revealed through him.
I also think of Stephen, a young man full of fire and zeal for God.  Stephen was willing to give his life for the One who had given His life for him.  He is about to be stoned for righteousness sake and sees Jesus, no longer seated, but standing at the right hand of God, preparing to receive him into glory.
Who is in attendance at his stoning but Saul, the same man that come would come to be known as the Apostle Paul.  I have to believe that this had a profound affect upon him and began to prepare his heart for what would later take place on the road to Damascus.
Oh that we would receive the grace and strength that allowed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to stand in face of persecution and the threat of death and declare that we know our God is able to deliver us, but even if He doesn't, we will not bow!  Oh God, help us to realize that it is all for Your glory and Yours alone!
Still Looking for the Abundant Life?
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
John 10:10 (NIV)
Many of us quote this passage of Scripture, with great expectation of God granting us houses and cars and money beyond our wildest dreams.  Well, of course, that's what abundant life is really all about, right?
There is another popular passage of Scripture that also comes to mind, though.  It is found in the gospel according to John, chapter 14 and verse 6.  Jesus answers a question asked by one of His disciples saying, "I am the way and the truth and the life."  Wow, did you see that?  He said the way, truth and LIFE!  Could it be that Jesus was speaking of us actually having more of Him in our lives?
As we watch news stories and read of the lives of the rich and famous on the internet and in various magazines and publications, it is clear that money, material possessions and fame do not bring the happiness and fulfillment that many thought it would.  I believe it actually turns out to be rather anticlimactic for many that make it to that place they've always dreamed of.  It is then, in the emptiness of all that they hoped it would be, that they desperately turn to something else to fill a place in their lives that only God can fill.  Sadly, this is often sex, drugs, alcohol or even suicide.
Ironically enough, Jesus prefaces this statement in John 10:10 saying, "The enemy comes only to steal and kill and destroy."  So, the choice is made clear to us.  But, of course, the choice is ours to make.
Something I have come to learn and treasure over the years is the blessing of having a grateful heart.  You see, you can have all the money and material possessions in the world and still be unhappy, unfulfilled and ungrateful.  Where does this leave you?  On a never-ending quest to get more.  This is also known as greed and lust.  Greed and lust are never satisfied.
One of the subtle tactics the enemy uses to ensnare us in this trap is an age old trick he used on Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden.  He cleverly paints a picture and casts the light in such a way, that we forget all that God has blessed us with and causes us to focus on what we don't have.  You may have also heard the saying, "the grass is always greener on the other side."
You see, it all comes down to a matter of perspective.  When you look at the glass that stops halfway, do you see the glass half empty or half full?  The grateful heart sees the glass half full, realizing that half a glass is much better than nothing at all.  When we look at our lives and all that God has blessed us with, are we truly grateful?  Have we taken time to count our blessings?
In the end, our earthly possessions will fade, in eternity's light.  Jesus said, "What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?"  Please, don't get me wrong.  I have nothing against being blessed with earthly or material possessions.  But, again, all things must be kept in proper perspective.
Luke 12:48 says, "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked."  Fame and fortune should only serve as tools for us to lead others to the One who gave His life that we might find true abundant life, in Him.
Faithfulness...A Key to Promotion!!!
Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.
Luke 16:10 (NIV)
Many times, in life, we are waiting for God to promote us or give us greater responsibility, but what are we doing while we are waiting?  Have we proven ourselves faithful with what He has already given us?  Have we passed the test at hand, or do we feel that surely God would not judge us based upon the insignificant responsibility we have now?
We often make excuse and half-heartedly steward what God has already given us, thinking it is just a light thing, that couldn't really mean much.  I mean, honestly, the meager salary that I make now, the small group that I lead, the ungrateful folks that I minister to...it's nothing compared to what God has shown me for my life.  One day I will speak to nations, millions will know my name...I will be wealthy beyond my wildest imagination, my ministry will be one of the largest in the world.
How often we are deceived into believing that, our stewardship over what seems so insignificant now, has little or nothing to do with what God has in store for us in the future.  But, the fact of the matter is, until we have proven ourselves faithful in the small things, we will never see those great visions and dreams come to pass.
I am mindful of a couple of different stories from Scripture that illustrate this so well.  One is the story of a young shepherd boy, named David.  David is off in the fields and pastures, guarding and watching over a flock of sheep.  Being a shepherd was not a glorious job, in any form or fashion.  But we see David, tending the sheep and ministering to the Lord.  Though, this may have seemed like an insignificant and meaningless job, David did not view it as such.
As we read in 1 Samuel 17, David took this so seriously, that he risked his own life to rescue sheep that had been carried off by a lion and a bear.  I mean, really, was one sheep worth him risking his very life?  Yes, to David it was.  And it was through these experiences that he found new hope, faith and strength in God.  This is what helped to prepare him to face Goliath.
There is also the story of Joseph, as told in the book of Genesis.  A young man who also had dreams of greatness.  Joseph is sold into slavery by his own brothers, because of their jealousy.  He is also falsely accused of trying to rape Potiphar's wife and thrown into prison, as a result.  Yet, through this all, Joseph remains faithful.  Faithful to God and his convictions.
Joseph could have allowed the things that happened to him to discourage him and cause him to become bitter and resentful.  As a result, he could have found excuse not continue to serve and honor God.  He could have allowed the poison of bitterness to keep him from walking in a spirit of excellence, even in the midst of a very difficult season of his life.  After all, this was far from the dreams God had given him, so why not just remain complacent and wait for God to deliver him and bring him to his appointed destination?
It is often in the place of humility and obscurity that the Lord prepares us for the work that He has ordained for us to perform.  It is in this place that we learn of our utter need and dependence upon Him.  This is the place where we learn to trust Him and discover His faitfulness.  This is where we develop the confidence in knowing that, if God be for us, He is more than the world against us.  It is here that we learn to completely surrender to Him and find that it is better to please Him more than man.
As a husband and father, my first ministry begins at home.  I am called to be the head of my family, the king and priest of my home.  Scripture also tell me, in Matthew 23:11, "The greatest among you will be your servant."  Though I can go out and minister tirelessly to others, the real question is, how is my service at home?  Am I showing the same love, grace and compassion to my own family?  Am I willing to lay down my life for my wife and children, without making them feel that they are a burden to me?
The Apostle Paul says in his second letter to the church at Corinth, "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."  What is the attitude of my heart as I minister to my family, even when they may seem ungrateful?
I remember, years ago, when I worked for my church in the Chicago area.  I began as a voluteer, just content to be of service to the Lord and ministry.  I was responsible for cleaning the sanctuary, following the services.  I recall having to fix chairs that had been thrown over and moved, cleaning up piles of soiled paper towels, washing dishes that weren't even supposed to be used by the members.  I remember thinking to myself, what is wrong with these people?  After all, these are supposed to be adults.  Why couldn't they clean up behind themselves?
As I went on and on about this in my mind and heart, the Lord asked me a question.  He said, if you have a problem doing this, how can I use you to serve my people and minister to them when they have messed up their lives and need your help to fix them?  That put things in a whole new perspective for me.  I began to experience God's presence in a whole new way as I cleaned the church after that.
Whether we are cleaning a toilet or serving a meal to someone who will never know our name, let us be found faithful and diligent in doing whatever God has given us to do.  Let us not despise the day of small beginnings.  Remember, the Lord has called us to do all that we do as unto Him anyway.  Even giving a cup of water to a small child, is serving Christ...the King of kings and Lord of lords.
Tithing: A Personal Testimony
 8 “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.
   “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’
   “In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. 11 I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the LORD Almighty. 12 “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the LORD Almighty.
Malachi 3:8-12 (NIV)
I once heard a minister say, "You can't beat God giving!"  I have to say, I have definitely come to see this proven in my own life.  But, do I give because I expect God to give me more in return?  No!
To me, giving or paying my tithes is an acknowledgement of God's provision in my life.  It is an act of saying, "God you are my source and my provider!"  It is a matter of giving God what is due to Him.
Actually, when we really look at it, everything that I am and that I have belongs to God.  He is my creator, the one who has blessed me with the ability to do the things that I am able to do.  He has blessed me with strength in my body, with the activity and use of my limbs.  He has blessed me with the intellect to comprehend and communicate.  He has invested gifts and talents in me, allowing me to do things that I would not otherwise be able to do.  Of course, I could go on.
Anyway, about 5 years ago, my wife and I were faced with a very trying situation.  We had made some bad decisions regarding our employment and finances, which caused a ripple effect, leaving us in the midst of a standoff with our mortgage company.  We were on the verge of losing our home.
My wife and I, frustrated with our previous jobs, left them without another one in sight.  I know, a very foolish decision on our part.  As it turned out, we both ended up unemployed for about 3 months.  During this period of time, we began to fall behind on our bills.  We managed to get by for a while, robbing Peter to pay Paul, but it eventually all caught up with us.
We had gotten so far behind on our mortgage payments, that the mortgage company initiated foreclosure proceedings against us and would no longer accept payments.  In order to prevent them from moving forward, we had to negotiate an acceptable repayment plan that would bring us current.
This process required us to list our income and expenses.  What we had, once everything was listed, was a shortage of about $1,000 a month.  As it turned out, this shortage was about the same amount as our tithe, which we had also included in our budget.
Once submitted, as you might imagine, our plan was rejected.  This was due to the fact that our expenses exceeded our income and did not prove that we were able to afford to pay our mortgage, let alone get caught up on the past due balance.
We had saved our mortgage payments, borrowed from our retirement plans and received contributions from family and friends to assist.  However, none of this would make a difference if the mortgage company would not agree to accept our repayment plan.
I recall the day that I had to call to speak with the gentleman that was responsible for our account.  I felt rather intimidated and nervous, as this conversation would basically be the deciding point regarding whether my family and I would lose our home.
The decision came down to one issue...whether we would remove our tithe from our monthly budget or not.  As the representative for the mortgage company explained, this would be the only way they were willing to work with us.  However, with firm conviction, I let him know that I was confident that we could make the payments going forward, but that we could not stop paying our tithes.
He reiterated again, that this would be the only way that he could give his approval for a repayment plan that would prevent them from proceeding with the foreclosure.  I expressed, once more, my sincere desire to work with them, but let him know that I could not withhold my tithe.
After realizing that this was not a point of negotiation, the gentleman asked me to hold.  As I remained on hold for several minutes, it seemed like an eternity.  Finally, he returned, letting me know that he was able to obtain the necessary approval to work with us.  Hallelujah!!!  Glory be to God!
Over the next several months, we were, in fact, able to bring our mortgage payments current.  God has since blessed us to refinance our mortgage for less than our original interest rate and made provision for us make our payments every month, without falling behind again.  God is faithful...all the time!
Though, I am often tempted to look at what I have in my hand as a limitation, God reminds me that it is only a seed for an abundant harvest that He desires to bring forth.  So, I ask you today...is your faith in the seed you hold in your hand or in the one who made the seed and causes every harvest to come forth in its season?
This is just one of many stories that I could share of God's favor, provision, faithfulness and blessing.  Over the years He has blessed us in ways that I never thought possible.  But, I pray that this testimony will, in some small way, bless, encourage and inspire you.
Fan the Flame!!!
I came upon something today, that I'd written quite a while ago.  However, I believe it is quite appropriate for sharing today with all that we see going on in the world in this time and season.  I pray that it blesses and inspires you in some way.
For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.  For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.  2 Timothy 1:6-7 (NIV)
The Apostle Paul reminds Timothy to "fan into flame the gift of God."  Many of us have seen the smoldering ashes of a dying fire.  A fire that may have once burned with intensity and brightness, now only a dim glowing light with a spark here and there.  Yet, however small and dim it may be, it doesn't take much to set it ablaze once again.
As I have been meditating on this passage of scripture for the past several days, a couple more passages come to mind.  In Matthew 24:12 Jesus warns that in the last days the love of many will grow cold because of the increase of wickedness.  Also, in Revelation 3:15-16 Jesus, speaking to the church says, "I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.  I wish you were either one or the other!  So, because you are lukewarm - neither hot nor cold - I am about to spit you out of my mouth."
I have no doubt that we are living in the last days.  God is moving mightily in the hearts of His people, calling us higher, drawing us closer.  Many of us have allowed the distractions and cares of the world to hinder and, at times, stop us from living each and every day with a sense of eternal purpose and destiny.
As the conductor of a train gives the final boarding call and the sound of the trains' whistle fills the air, so the call of the Spirit resounds throughout the earth.  "All aboard that's coming aboard!"  Yet, there are still so many souls to be reached.
Dr. Paul Osteen shared such a powerful message on Wednesday evening about "A Passionate God."  He went on to share three parables from Luke 15 that Jesus told, conveying just how valuable one soul is to God...to heaven...and should be to us.
Each and every day is an opportunity for us to share Jesus with someone.  Remember, this is not our home.  You and I are citizens of heaven...ambassadors for Christ in the earth.  If you have lost your zeal and feel like the things of the world are putting out your fire...FAN THE FLAME!!!
Are You Insane?
Ok, I'm not calling you crazy...LOL!  But check this out.  The great Physicist, Albert Einstein, said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting a different result.  Yet, how many of us, consciously or unconsciously, do the same thing day in and day out?
Whether it is destructive or unhealthy habits, relationships or even, words that we speak.  Sometimes they're things we've learned from our parents or picked up over time from the people that we associate with.  Or perhaps they're things that we've allowed to unconsciously influence us through the things that we watch or listen to.
I once heard Pastor Joel Osteen tell a story about a woman who would always cut the corners off of her ham, before putting it in the oven to prepare it.  Now, I'm not quoting this verbatim, so please forgive me if I miss a few details here.
One day when asked why she did this, she had to pause and think.  Her response was simply, "that is the way Momma always did it."  Well, as it turns out, her mother did it because she saw her mother do it.  She eventually came to learn that this all started because her grandmother's oven was too small to hold a pan large enough to fit the whole ham.  Therefore, she'd cut off the corners to make it fit into a smaller pan that would fit in the oven.
I know, in my own life, I've had to confront many sinful and destructive behaviors.  Some were from generational cycles, some from bad habits that I picked up over time.  What opened my eyes and began to make a difference in my life?  God working in my life through the Holy Spirit, illuminating His Word to me, tearing down the strongholds that once held me bound.
The Lord tells us, in Romans 12, not to be conformed to the things of this world, but, rather be transformed by the renewing of our minds.  How do we do this?  Through His holy Word.
2 Corinthians 10 tells us about pulling down strongholds and taking our thoughts captive, bringing them into obedience to Christ.  We must begin to see things the way God sees them.  We must begin to seek and understand His wisdom and instruction.
God is our creator and knows us better than we know ourselves.  As we spend time in His Word and in His presence, he will begin to reveal to us the sinful and destructive habits that we've allowed to invade our lives.  The things that have kept us from experiencing the abundant life He came to give us.  Sometimes its just a matter of gaining a different perspective.
Whether you're struggling with low self-esteem, debt, lust, depression, addiction...whatever it may be today, I believe a key to your deliverance is breaking the strongholds the enemy has established in your life, by beginning to renew your mind.  Search God's Word regarding whatever you struggle or challenge is, as someone searching for buried treasure.  Ask God to open your eyes and to give you understanding to begin to see the sinful and destructive patterns in your life and to give you the grace to begin to make a change.
Remember, we didn't become the way we are today overnight.  So, in much the same way, we cannot expect an instant change.  But, if we are persistent, continue to seek and trust in God and are willing to obey what He is leading us to do, we will begin to see change take place in our lives and begin to live the lives that He has ordained for us to.
How Quickly We've Forgotten!
I wrote this poem last year after listening to many of Dr. King's speeches and visiting the King Center a few months earlier.  I was inspired to write this after reflecting on many of the struggles and challenges that Dr. King and many others endured and fought, looking at many of the derogatory images, ideas and role models that are being celebrated and promoted in our society today.
It is bad enough when we have interracial conflict to contend with, but what is even worse, is when we stand divided, amongst our own race.  Jesus said that a house divided against itself cannot stand.
Dr. King and those that stood along side of him chose to take the path less traveled.  They chose a path of personal sacrifice, for a greater cause.  They chose a path that took them out of their comfort zones.  This was a path that often put them in harm's way, which even, eventually, cost Dr. King his life.
Selah.
How Quickly We've Forgotten
by Herbert Poole
Oh, how quickly we've forgotten
The struggle and the fight
Of those who bled and died
To end slavery's dark night.
How quickly we've forgotten
The weight of the oppression
Imposed by chains and shackles
And looming walls of segregation.
How quickly we've forgotten
The degradation and the shame
Felt by those who've gone before us
When called such condescending names.
How quickly we've forgotten
The need to love one another
As in a heartbeat, we can turn
And strike, shoot or kill our sister or brother.
How quickly we've forgotten
Our strength when we stand united
As we've allowed lust, greed and envy
To leave us blinded and divided.
How quickly we've forgotten
The pride of earning an honest wage
As we fight, cheat and steal
From one another in violence and rage.
How quickly we've forgotten
The doors of opportunity that once stood closed
As the imprisonment many now face
Is so often self imposed.
So, let us awaken from this nightmare
And remember, once again, the dream
That inspired so many before us
As we remember Dr. Martin Luther King!
Time to Arise from the Ashes!!!
Blessings to you, my friend!  I pray that you are encouraged by this word today, as I felt impressed to share this.
In 1 Samuel 30 we read the story of how King David and his men returned home to find that all they counted precious had been stolen.  The enemy had come in and taken their women, children and possessions.  Then to add insult to injury, they had burned what remained.
Returning to find this, David and his men were so distraught that they wept until they were exhausted.  Then David's own men began to turn against him, because of this.  But King David began to encourage himself in the Lord.  He began to remember God's goodness and mercy and how God had delivered him in times past.
David, before doing anything else, inquired of the Lord.  At the word of the Lord, David arose from the ashes and led his men to pursue the enemy.
He could have chosen to remain where he was and mourn the loss of everything.  He and his men could have allowed bitterness and sorrow to fill their hearts and leave them paralyzed, with no hope or desire to go on.  Even considering the hurt, rejection or discouragement David may have felt following the incident in the previous chapter.  This is when Achish informed him that he and his men could not go with them into battle because the Philistines did not trust him.  Therefore, he sent them home.
Isn't it amazing that while all this was transpiring, they had no idea that the enemy had come in and raided their home.  What would have become of their wives, children and possessions had they continued on into battle with the Philistines?  But what looked like a great disappointment and defeat, God turned into one of their greatest victories!
Regardless of where you are today or what your situation may be, it is time for us to arise from the ashes of defeat to reclaim everything God has given us.  It is time for us to pursue and overtake the enemy of our souls.  It is time for us to arise and press the battle to the gate...time for us to stand in the power and authority given to us through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
Remember, stay strong, be encouraged and know that you are blessed!!!
You Might Want to Stop and Think Bout What You're Gettin' Ready to Say!
by Herbert Poole
You might want to stop and think
Bout what you're gettin' ready to say,
Will it really make a difference
At the end of the day?
You might want to stop and think
Bout what you're gettin' ready to say,
Cause the words you choose to speak
May be filled with death and decay.
You might want to stop and think
Bout what you're gettin' ready to say,
As the lies that you tell
Might lead some poor soul astray.
You might want to stop and think
Bout what you're gettin' ready to say,
As the wounds your words may cause
Cannot simply be wiped away.
You might want to stop and think
Bout what you're gettin' ready to say,
Cause you'll soon find for broken promises
There's always a price to pay.
You might want to stop and think
Bout what you're gettin' ready to say,
And just pause for a minute
And take the time to pray.
Why "Herbisms"
[Updated 6/28/2013]
I thought it might be appropriate to mention, obviously the name of my blog has changed.  As a result, I've considered removing this post.  However, I felt that it adds a bit of history and context to it's evolution.
Just in case you were wondering...
So, you may be wondering...why in the heck did he decide to call his blog "Herbisms to Inspire."  Well, I'm glad you asked.
A while ago, for a good period of time, I used to send out inspirational text messages.  It was always a bit challenging sending them out.  I always had to copy and paste the message multiple times just to get it out to everyone that I wanted to send it to.  This was due to the limitation on the number of recipients my phone would allow me to send the message to at one time.
When I finally upgraded to another mobile phone, low and behold, it became even more difficult to send out the texts.  I eventually gave up this ministry out of sheer frustration.  I know that sounds pretty lame on my part, but just keepin it real.
I would often hear from others, days, weeks or even months later, about how much they were blessed by those messages.  There were so many accounts of how God used those messages to bless someone with a word that they needed, just at the right time.
So, I recently spoke with a dear brother that I used to sing with in the Lakewood Church Choir.  He was one of the folks that used to receive the texts that I'd send out.  Can you guess what he told me?  "I miss those Herbisms!"
And thus the inspiration for the name of my blog.
"The Thing Of Which I Am A Part Is Bigger Than The Part That I Play!"
You may have heard this statement before.  This is something Israel Houghton used to share with us, when I sang with the Lakewood Church Choir.  Good times!!!
Israel is one of the worship leaders at Lakewood Church.  Each week either him, Dakri Brown (our Choir Director) or Cindy Cruse-Ratcliff would drop a few pearls of wisdom on us, in an effort to lead us to a deeper place in our walk with God.  As they say, you cannot lead where you have not been.  And we, as a group, were given the privilege of leading the congregation into God's presence each week.
Anyway, this statement is one of those things that you've got think on for a while before you are able to fully appreciate the value of what is being said.  Kind of like a dish that has to marinate for a while before the true flavor is brought out.
When we really stop and think about it, it's multidimensional.  You have to look at it from at least a couple of different perspectives.
First, I have to realize that there is something bigger than me, a big picture that I cannot possibly be fully aware of.  God's plans and ways are far beyond anything we could imagine, let alone comprehend.  I am one, among millions of believers all over the world.  God is the Divine Orchestrator and Architect, the Master Planner of it all.  Even when it looks like one big mass of chaos, He's still in control, causing all things to work together to accomplish His plans and purposes.
It's like being a part of the Lakewood Church Choir.  We were all a part of something much bigger.  Something much bigger than most of us even realized.  One voice in the midst of hundreds of others, singing at one of the largest churches in the U.S.  Part of a ministry that was and is touching and changing lives all over the world.
Secondly, I have to realize that I also have a part to play.  Yes, each of us, regardless how insignificant that it may seem, have an individual role to play.  Just like the actors in a play or the pieces of a puzzle, we all have a place, something to contribute, whether large or small.  Each of us, with our unique personalities, gifts and talents all come together to create a beautiful tapestry.  All a part of God's great plan.
When we come to this realization and begin to seek God for His wisdom, guidance and direction to help us find our place in the big scheme of things, it is then that we begin to find true fulfillment in life.  Until then, we are like a fish out of water.  We're like someone groping for something in the dark or a leaf being carried aimlessly in the wind, with no direction or purpose.
As we start this new year and new decade, I challenge you to seek God for His purpose and direction for your life.  If you've been feeling discouraged, frustrated and unfulfilled, perhaps it's because you have not yet found the part that you play in the big picture of life.  Or perhaps you know what it is, but you've been too afraid to step out of your comfort zone.  Or maybe you have stepped out and like Peter, when he stepped out of the boat and began to walk on water, but lost your focus and began to sink.
Wherever you are, I pray right now that God would encourage and strengthen you.  I pray that He will grant you the wisdom, guidance and direction that you need to realize His calling and purpose for your life.  And I also pray that He would grant you the grace and provision to fulfill that call.  I pray He surrounds with others that will encourage, inspire and challenge you to keep moving forward and to help you get back up when you fall or want to give up.  In the blessed name of our precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Amen.
Happy 2011, my friend!  Remember, you can do all things through Christ, who strengthens you.
